After completing a successful technical stop at Natal Air Base in northern Brazil, the first six Argentine Air Force F-16 fighters reached the Río Cuarto Materiel Area in Córdoba Province, a milestone that reshapes the country’s combat aviation. Set against a long-running modernisation of national air power, the arrival of these aircraft locks in a strategic capability the service has awaited for years, placing Argentina back among the small group of nations operating an active supersonic fleet.
The first six F-16s at Río Cuarto and what they mean for the Argentine Air Force
After a prolonged wait, the induction of four twin-seat F-16BM aircraft (M1004, M1005, M1007 and M1008) and two single-seat F-16AM aircraft (M1009 and M1020) ends more than a decade without fighters of this category, following the retirement of the Mirage fleet in November 2015. Beyond the technological and operational step-change, the F-16s carry strong symbolic weight for Argentine Air Force personnel-particularly younger pilots who will begin their training on a new generation of fighters. With this purchase, the service regains its supersonic capability and strengthens its position as a key player within the regional defence framework.
Transfer from Denmark with KC-135R support
The ferry flight from Denmark was supported by three United States Air Force KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft, serials 63-8034, 63-8031 and 60-0328. These tankers provided logistical backing and conducted air-to-air refuelling during the ocean crossing and again on the leg from northern Brazil into Argentine territory. This package ensured flight safety and extended range for the incoming fighters, completing one of the most complex and consequential air operations carried out by the Argentine Air Force in recent years.
In parallel, the Argentine Air Force escorted the deployment using its own assets, including the Boeing 737 T-99 “Falkland Islands” and the KC-130H Hercules TC-69. These aircraft undertook logistics support, coordination, and search and rescue (SAR) roles. The combined effort highlights the level of planning and coordination achieved across different units, reinforcing an operation widely viewed as emblematic of the revival of Argentina’s national combat aviation.
Reception ceremony and Buenos Aires flypast on 6 December
The official F-16 reception ceremony will now take place on Saturday 6 December at 09:00, rather than Sunday 7 as originally planned. The event will be led by the President of the Nation, Javier Milei, alongside the Minister of Defence, Luis Petri, and the senior leadership of Argentina’s Armed Forces.
As part of the welcome programme, the Ministry of Defence has also confirmed that the air display over the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires has been moved to Saturday 6 December. Under the official schedule, the F-16s will take off again from Río Cuarto to conduct a low-level flypast at around 610 metres (2,000 ft), following a route that includes the Presidential Palace, May Avenue, Miserere Square, and an additional pass along 9 July Avenue from south to north. The flight will allow the Argentine public to see-over national skies for the first time-the new supersonic fighters set to shape the country’s future air-defence posture.
Developing story.
