Royal Navy tracks Russian corvette Boikiy through the English Channel

With Russian naval activity increasing in waters close to Western Europe, Royal Navy patrol craft intercepted and shadowed the Russian corvette Boikiy as it made its way through the English Channel-one of the continent’s busiest and most sensitive sea lanes. The task formed part of routine measures used to observe and track foreign naval vessels operating in international waters near the United Kingdom.

In an official Royal Navy statement, the patrol ships HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, supported by a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron, were assigned to follow the corvette during its Channel passage and to ensure its transit remained consistent with international maritime law. The tanker MT General Skobelev was also in the area. With the British units alongside, the Russian ship’s movements could be kept under continuous watch for the duration of its journey through the region.

It is worth noting that Boikiy-a Steregushchiy-class corvette of the Russian Navy-is among the surface combatants Moscow regularly deploys to the Atlantic and other strategically important areas. Vessels of this type offer substantial capability for escort duties, patrol tasks and maintaining naval presence in distant seas.

Expanded European monitoring

The English Channel was not the only stretch where European navies kept the corvette under observation. According to the latest reports, once Boikiy departed the area it was then monitored by a Royal Netherlands Navy patrol boat during its onward voyage in the North Sea, underlining coordination among European naval forces when tracking such vessels.

This development comes two weeks after HMS Mersey and a Wildcat aircraft from 815 Naval Air Squadron intercepted the Russian Udaloy-class destroyer Severomorsk, along with the merchant ships Sparta IV and MYS Zhelaniya, in the North Sea.

A repeating pattern in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

The English Channel episode also fits into a broader run of recent monitoring. Days earlier, Spanish and UK vessels had already escorted the same corvette, Boikiy, as it passed through the Strait of Gibraltar-another critical chokepoint for naval traffic between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Together, these movements strengthen the impression that the Russian ship is on an extended deployment, transiting multiple key locations around Europe.
