Access to GPT-5.4-Cyber is limited to the “highest-tier” users

OpenAI has unveiled a new AI model called GPT-5.4-Cyber. Like Anthropic’s Claude Mythos, this new “cyber-permissive” edition of GPT-5.4 is intended for defending against cyber threats rather than for general public use.

Why OpenAI is releasing GPT-5.4-Cyber now

OpenAI says the GPT-5.4-Cyber variant has been created specifically to support preparations for the release of more powerful models later this year.

“As part of our preparations for the arrival over the next few months of increasingly capable models from OpenAI, we are fine-tuning our models specifically to provide defensive capabilities in cybersecurity, starting today with a GPT-5.4 variant trained to operate in cyber-threat-permissive conditions: GPT-5.4-Cyber.”

Who can access GPT-5.4-Cyber

Access to GPT-5.4-Cyber is restricted to the “highest-tier” users who are “ready to work with OpenAI to authenticate as cybersecurity professionals”.

What makes GPT-5.4-Cyber different for cybersecurity work

OpenAI says the limitation is necessary because GPT-5.4-Cyber is “specifically optimised to expand capabilities in cybersecurity and has fewer functional restrictions”.

“This is a version of GPT-5.4 that lowers the refusal threshold for legitimate cybersecurity work and enables new possibilities for complex defensive workflows, including binary reverse engineering capabilities that allow security professionals to analyse compiled software for potential malware, vulnerabilities, and the robustness of security controls without needing access to its source code.

Because this model is more flexible, we are starting with a limited, iterative deployment among verified security solution providers, organisations, and researchers.”

What GPT means

GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a family of modern neural-network models developed by OpenAI. These models can generate human-like text, hold conversations, write code, and analyse information using a transformer architecture. GPT underpins popular chatbots such as ChatGPT.
